Project Overview
Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Warren County Elementary School was designed to create a healthier, more sustainable educational environment that supports student achievement, wellness, and long-term environmental responsibility. Designed by Jennifer Cash of Sherman Carter Barnhart in collaboration with Chris Macintyre of Warren County Public Schools, the project was completed on June 1, 2025.
Serving approximately 850 students, the facility was developed with a strong emphasis on sustainability, indoor environmental quality, and resource-conscious material selection. These priorities align with the school’s broader net-zero goals and commitment to healthier learning spaces.
A major component of the project’s sustainability approach was the installation of approximately 43,000 square feet of HempWood Premium Select Organic Flooring throughout classrooms and office spaces. The design team recognized the flooring’s ability to positively influence occupant wellness, environmental performance, and the overall educational experience, making it a key contributor to the school’s mission of creating healthier spaces for students and staff.
Life-Cycle Impact
Because educational facilities experience constant daily traffic, durability and longevity were essential considerations during material selection. HempWood flooring was selected for its ability to withstand the demands of a high-traffic institutional setting while maintaining long-term performance.
Its durability helps reduce future replacement needs, minimize waste generation, and lower the environmental impact associated with ongoing maintenance and material disposal, contributing to a more sustainable life-cycle footprint.
Resource Efficiency

HempWood flooring utilizes industrial hemp, a renewable agricultural resource known for its efficient growth cycle and lower environmental burden compared to many traditional hardwood alternatives.
Hemp requires fewer agricultural inputs while supporting regenerative farming practices and sustainable manufacturing processes. The HempWood production facility also emphasizes utility-efficient manufacturing by operating with the support of solar panel energy, helping reduce overall energy consumption and environmental impact throughout the production process.
The use of hemp-based flooring demonstrates how renewable resources can be integrated into high-performance environments without compromising quality, aesthetics, or functionality.
Human Health
Equally important to the project was the focus on human health and indoor environmental quality. The flooring system utilizes a zero-VOC formula, helping minimize the release of hazardous compounds commonly associated with poor indoor air quality and occupant discomfort.
Low-emission materials were prioritized because studies continue to show direct connections between indoor environmental quality, cognitive performance, concentration, and the overall learning experience.
